ROBYN &
JAMES SMYLY

CAPTAIN /  ENGINEER / PADI DIVEMASTER

About Us

Ahoy! Sailors, Scuba Divers, Ocean Lovers & Protectors, New & Old Friends!

Getting into the yachting industry has been a dream that we have both shared for many years.  And we made it happen by jumping on a 59ft Voyage Catamaran and sailing her from Cape Town, South Africa to Tortola, British Virgin Islands. The voyage took 43 days, with no WiFi, no rat race, other people, or land. It was 43 days of disconnecting to help us reconnect. Upon setting foot on the ground (after quarantine - can you believe it?), we jetted off to the US for the Annapolis boat show as we had signed up for another delivery from Annapolis to Tortola against both the Tradewinds and Gulfstream. After 59 knots of wind and 12 days later,  I got offered a temporary job on MY Unbridled as a chief stewardess and dive instructor based in St Marteen, while James jumped at the opportunity to add to his miles by doing a delivery from Tortola to Fort Lauderdale. Once there he completed his AEC 2 and did day work as a deckhand on coincidently another MY Unbridled and MY Four Jacks. James then joined me in St Marteen to get an official captain's ticket to put behind all of his amazing experience. We accepted one last temporary job as a chief stewardess and first mate on MY Pura Vida while waiting for the final administrative steps to happen for our BVI work permits with Voyage Charters as Captain and Chef.

We are excited to host you on the beautiful Voyage Catamarans, Charter Boat of the Year 2022!!!

Here's a short introduction to us, your crew.

We are both from sunny South Africa.  James, from the more civilized Pietermaritzburg, with the beautiful and lush Midlands Meander just around the corner, where dairy farms thrive.  A place where if you are not busy enjoying the quaint pubs then you are mountain biking or canoeing.  While I, however, went from one small town to an even smaller town (with literally one road).  Mtunzini, meaning 'The Place of Shade', with untouched beaches and coastal forest, to Sodwana Bay, a World Heritage Site and home to the top 10 dive sites in the world.

To get to know us a bit better, we thought we would do this by answering some questions.

1. What brings a smile to your face every time?

R: Going for a swim in big waves.  There is something about the great power of the ocean and feeling like a rag doll.  It makes me laugh every time - adrenaline? Oh and PUPPIES.

J: Without saying all the obvious fun things in life, what really makes me happy is accomplishing a difficult task.  Overcoming challenges gives me great satisfaction.

2. What do you like to do in your free time?

R: That depends on my mood.  I really enjoy getting together with friends and making a day of it, either on the beach or hiking, definitely something outdoors. I'm also happy with alone time, reading my book, listening to music, or spending time experimenting in the kitchen.

J: Watch sport, DIY projects, and BRAAI while spending time outdoors with friends and family.

3. If I could choose my last meal, it would be...

R: This is a tricky one because I LOVE food.  It's a toss-up between a Durban Curry or Sushi.

J: My famous FRY-UP, which is fried egg on toast, with fried tomatoes seasoned with basil, brown sugar, salt, and pepper, fried mushrooms, fried banana sprinkled with cinnamon, and non-fried avocado on the side with balsamic vinegar and aromat.

4. I was the first person in my family to...

R: Punch a shark with my fist.  This was on the Sardine Run, which became my adrenaline addiction for many years.  It's a feeding frenzy and I had to nudge many sharks away from myself and my clients.

J: Complete the Duzi Canoe Marathon.  A couple of months before the start of the race, I decided to give it a bash even though I had never been in a canoe before.  I spoke to a mate and he agreed to partner up.  The first step was to get in a pool with the canoe while my mates created 'rapids' and other obstacles.  We did the qualifiers and gave the race horns.  It was an unforgettable adventure.

5. If you could have a gigantic billboard with anything on it, what would it say and why?

(stolen from Tim Ferriss)

R: 'KNOW YOUR LIMITS - THEN IGNORE THEM' this is my favorite quote by John Mason. Basically, don't be stagnant, keep moving, growing, exploring, and discovering. Take advantage of your time.

J: 'BE ADVENTUROUS' it's cool to get out there, see different things, keep yourself busy, be athletic, get sunshine, and not be cooped up watching Netflix all day.
